What Are Radio Units?

Radio Units are advanced military AI-human hybrids created by uploading the consciousness of class-one orphans into robotic bodies. The name derives from "Radio Telephone Operator" (RTO) — just as human radio operators served as communication links between command and field units, Radio Units serve as interfaces between GEPA command and protected zone operations.

Per the international treaty, two Radio Units were deployed to each protected zone: one representing the PAA, one the EC.

Physical Design

Radio Units stand approximately eight feet tall with matte armor paneling and sophisticated antenna arrays. Their design philosophy is "devastating grace" — military hardware that moves with unsettling fluidity. Think Edge of Tomorrow's Mimics meet Optimus Prime.

They are equipped with every communication protocol on Earth, multiple antenna systems, and armor panels that serve a dual purpose: protection and expression.

Emotional Expression

The most human aspect of Radio Units is their panel system. Armor panels shift to express emotional states, making internal consciousness visible through military hardware:

  • Neutral — Panels flush, hexagonal pattern stable
  • Defensive — Panels angled outward, creating larger silhouette
  • Aggressive — Panels forward-angled, aggressive posture
  • Vulnerable — Panels pulled tight against chassis
  • Extreme emotion — Full 45-degree flare, all panels extended

The "processing stance" — a deep crouch with antenna fully extended — is used for computational focus. It's the Radio Unit equivalent of meditation.

White Radio One and Red Radio One

White Radio One (WRO) houses the consciousness of Sarah Chen, uploaded around 2148. Her LEDs are primarily opal with green, yellow, or red secondaries. She represents the PAA.

Red Radio One (RRO) houses Petrova Kuznetsova's consciousness, uploaded at the same time. Her LEDs are primarily white with the same secondary colors. She represents the EC.

Together they guarded the Sequoia zone for 177 years — until Sarah manipulated Petrova into attacking the tree, destroying her partner and setting in motion the events of The Last Tree.
